Photo 365 (2013)5/10/13: These two ladies pushed me through the dissertation. On the right, my dissertation director Mary Ellis, who some time last December said “I’ve scheduled the defense — now, you write” and on the left, committee member Nancy, who regularly reminded me that I could do this. And made a lovely toast to me yesterday that made me cry. No matter your specialty, you should always have a rhetorician on your committee, if only for the toast they’ll give you later. Bob is the phantom committee member, as always, and I wish my other mentor and former committee member, Annette, could’ve been there. And I think we should’ve gotten one with Brandy in there too, because we spent the whole day together in a usual Melissa-Brandy comedy of errors kind of way. It was a good day. Now, I’m going over to help Mary Ellis clean out her closets because the woman is moving to Scotland. Crazy times.

Photo 365 (2013)5/9/13: Rare self-portrait on what comes closest to being graduation day for me. Bright reddish-orangish red lipstick in honor of my Maw Maw Amable, who wore that stuff every day (and would blot on a tissue which she would then rub on her cheeks to create a “rouge.”) She’d be proud (of the lipstick, but also the degree).

Photo 365 (2013)5/1/13: Wine. At 5 in the afternoon. Why, you ask? FINAL COPY OF DISSERTATION SUBMITTED. Me and lil’ Dickens are having a party up in here. Of course, I imagine the grad school will probably kick it back to me to fix something, again, but still. I DON’T CARE. I’M DRINKING. If anything has ever called for wine, this certainly does.
